A personal story-
My two infant daughters and pregnant wife and I were stranded on a mountain in rural TN. the road is steep and hard to navigate in good conditions. The Ice storm of 2026 hit us and it was impassible. We lost power and as a byproduct of being rural also lost phone service. This was our home and we had no other place to go so of course we stayed, there was no other place we would want to be for that matter.
We had no power for over 5 days with temperatures dropping to and below 0 degrees. With the conditions and our location, an emergency extraction would have likely been via helicopter.
With out my training and some basic provisions and preparations, we likely could have been another statistic. Maybe even worse than being a statistic, the failure of not being enough of a man to provide for and protect my family.
I thought a lot as I stoked the fire through the long cold nights, slowly sipping whiskey, watching my family as they slept safe and comfortable. I thought a lot about what it means to be a husband, a father, a man. I thought about how devastating it must be too lose a child and feel helpless, not being able to do anything and praying for the best of others to intervene.
My family will always be safe by my side. I feel confident and capable about that. My children where happy and my wife wasn’t the least bit stressed as she saw me as confident and capable. Together during what could have been a serious emergency we ultimately grew stronger.
I believe now as I always have, that every man should have the Competence to Govern their and their families Sovereignty.
