HEMA & Longsword
Historical European Martial Arts Training Near Nashville, Tennessee
Frontier Discipline Academy offers practical instruction in Historical European Martial Arts—commonly known as HEMA—in Ashland City, Tennessee, serving Nashville, Clarksville, Springfield and the surrounding Middle Tennessee area.
HEMA is the modern study and practice of historical European fighting systems preserved in medieval and Renaissance combat manuals. Our training treats these systems as functional martial arts rather than demonstrations, choreography or historical reenactment.
Students develop physical conditioning, footwork, distance, timing, striking mechanics, defense, tactical decision-making and the ability to apply techniques against a resisting opponent.
Longsword and Historical Weapons
The longsword provides the foundation of our historical weapons training. Students learn proper stance, guards, footwork, cuts, thrusts, parries, combinations, distance management and controlled sparring.
As students progress, training may also include:
Saber
Messer
Arming sword and buckler
Rapier and dagger
Historical wrestling and close combat
Staff and other impact weapons
Mixed-weapons exercises
Training draws from historical European fighting traditions while also incorporating modern coaching methods, physical conditioning and progressively resistant drills.
Historical Skill with Modern Relevance
Historical weapons training develops abilities that extend beyond the sword.
The principles found in historical combat systems—distance, timing, angles, leverage, initiative, weapon control and decisive movement—remain relevant when working with modern melee weapons and common improvised objects.
A longsword is not carried in modern daily life, but the physical and tactical concepts involved in using one can translate to sticks, canes, tools, knives and other handheld weapons. Training with different weapon lengths also teaches students how range changes a confrontation and how movement must adapt accordingly.
The goal is not to pretend that every historical technique transfers directly into a modern situation. The goal is to recognize the enduring principles behind effective armed movement and test those principles through disciplined practice.
Supplemental and Modern Weapons Training
Frontier Discipline Academy also trains with weapons outside the formal definition of HEMA, including knives, hatchets, staffs, flexible weapons, nunchaku and common improvised weapons.
Nunchaku are treated as a serious and highly effective close-range weapon. Their compact and concealable design can generate exceptional speed and striking force while permitting rapid changes in angle, rhythm and direction. Effective use requires precise control of distance, timing, movement and recovery—skills that also strengthen a student’s broader understanding of armed combat.
Training includes striking mechanics, defensive movement, weapon retention, transitions and controlled application against resisting partners. By working with weapons of different lengths, weights and mechanical characteristics, students learn principles that transfer across both historical and modern armed encounters.
A Martial Approach to Historical Fencing
Our HEMA program emphasizes:
Physical conditioning and work capacity
Historically grounded technique
Practical martial application
Structured partner drills
Progressive resistance
Distance and timing
Controlled sparring
Adaptability across different weapons
This is active martial training. Students should expect to move, work, think and test their skills under pressure. Beginners are welcome, and previous martial-arts or sword-fighting experience is not required.
